   Heat Recovery Ventilation

What is Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV)?

Mechanical heat recovery and ventilation is a means of extracting stale, warm air from ‘wet’ rooms in a house, i.e. kitchen, utility,

bathrooms etc., extracting its heat and transferring this heat to the fresh air being supplied from the outside into the ‘living’

areas, i.e. sitting, dining, bedrooms etc.

Why install HRV?

In modern, well insulated houses where energy consumption,

noise pollution, air tightness and efficiency are key words, air

quality can be a significant problem due to a tendency to keep

windows closed and a lack of external wall vents to provide

natural ventilation. This can give rise to high humidity, mould

and build-up of harmful gasses, leading to an unhealthy

situation for the occupants. A HRV system eliminates these

problems whilst allowing you to keep your house sealed thereby

giving you comfort and efficiency.

How does it work?

As stated, stale air with high humidity is extracted from the wet rooms and released, through a heat exchanger, to the outside of the building.

Fresh outside air is filtered and warmed by passing through the heat exchanger and supplied to the living areas.

The main constituents of the system are a network of supply and extract ducts carried in the ceiling space and attic, a supply and/or extract duct in the ceiling of the designated rooms and the main heat exchange unit with feeds to the outside of the building.

What are the benefits of HRV?

  • No mould growth in bedrooms, bathrooms etc. due to lower humidity.

  • Less noise from outside due to lack of external wall vents.

  • Less dust as windows can be kept closed.

  • Fresh smelling bathrooms because air is constantly being changed.

  • Increased security.

  • Increased energy efficiency of house.

  • Waking up refreshed!

Is it easy to install a HRV system?

A HRV system is very easy to install if it is designed properly and installed at the correct phase of the build. We will liase with your building contractor from the design phase of the project to ensure that the installation is carried out smoothly and unobtrusively.
